Well, I got my new flute mic today, an Audix FL_P. My other one got soaked when I was performing on a rainyday and stopped working. I have had it soaking in a 'rice' bath to dry it out. Unfortunately, I needed a flute mic for an upcoming gig and was afraid the old one wouldn't work and it's playing with a band, so I can't use a stand mic because I pick up the band.
Anyway, I like the way the new mic attaches to the flute...you uncrew the end cap, put on a rubber ring and screw the cap back on. I find I need to put an elastic on it, because I jump around a lot when playing and am afraid it will fall off.

Do you think your end cap mic sounds as good as a similar quality one on a stand? Do you notice differences?

Mic's attached to the flute pick up key clicks and also you have to practice breathing a bit differently to not get a woosh of air. They are outstanding for playing on stage and I use them for busking, but for proper recording, stand mics are better. Not only does that eliminate key clicks, you can also move closer or farther away to get more dynamics.
I rigged up this mount for one of my flutes and find it's pretty good.

Here is the clamp that came with the Audix.

Much prettier than my wool monstrosity, but this one picks up more clicks. I'm going to use it on my good flute (Miyazawa) if I need it, but generally I'll be using the permanent mount on my rougher flute.

Very cool, Penny Will! Video sheet music is new to me... won't it be great when I can have it all on a Kindle - no page turning. Thanks!

Yes, I invented it so when I go visiting all I need to take is my flute and a portable dvd player and I have all my music, with backing tracks, so I can torture people with impromptu concerts smiley

Try the Countryman Associates, Inc. ISOMAX 2 condenser clip-on mic with a hypercardioid pickup pattern! That's what I have been using for years...(and so has Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull fame!...) That will solve ALL of your problems!

Sincerely,

Bill McBirnie
