I'm an independent musician based in Toronto, and specialize in Asian traditional flutes, in particular the Japanese shinobue (transverse bamboo flute) and the Chinese dongxiao (vertical bamboo flute). I have been performing the shinobue with Japanese taiko drumming ensembles as well as Japanese folk music groups. In recent years I have mainly focused on studying the dongxiao and have performed in contemporary improvisational contexts, and also perform live multi-instrumental music for theatre and dance using flutes, percussion, live sound effects, and electronic media. My main training on the dongxiao has been with Hong Kong xiao master Tam Po Shek (www.tamposhek.com). I have also taken lessons with shinobue virtuoso Kaoru Watanabe, shakuhachi master Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos, and Taiwanese xiao maker/multi-instrument Winson Liao. |
